2024 Community Work Days!

Help us to maintain Shady Lane Cemetery, a beautiful place which has been abandoned by its owner!

This 100-year-old, 23-acre cemetery is being maintained by volunteers and by our nonprofit organization, Friends of Shady Lane Cemetery. This maintenance shows respect for the 6,000+ souls who rest in the cemetery. But our efforts are about more than simply respecting the dead. Maintenance of this previously-overgrown cemetery has provided a beautiful, peaceful green space for the community, featuring towering trees and mountain views.

We need volunteers during the growing season (April to October) to mow, trim, and collect sticks, fallen branches, and trash from the property. We invite you to bring your own equipment or to make arrangements to use one of our donated mowers. We are happy to certify community service hours and we are happy to work with teens and supervised children. Volunteer groups are always welcome!

If you want to get a feel for the work and the property, join us for one of our 2024 Community Work Days: April 20, May 18, June 15, July 20, August 17, September 14, and October 19, from 9 to noon. Dress appropriately for the weather and the work, and bring work gloves.

Since the cemetery is abandoned, there is no liability insurance on the property, so anyone entering assumes the risk of injury to person or property. We recommend that all volunteers work in groups of two or more and have a phone available in case of injury. Be aware that the cemetery features rocky soil, slopes, holes, hidden gravestones, poison ivy, insects, and other hazards common to the outdoors.

5K Race, Fun Walk, & Basket Raffle!

On June 22, 2024, Friends of Shady Lane Cemetery is sponsoring Maintain the Lane, a 5K Run/Walk/Basket Raffle to raise money to help us care for the cemetery. We are seeking runners, sponsors, and donations of baskets for the raffle (minimum $25 value). We hope to establish this race and our September golf tournament as our annual major fundraisers. Money raised helps us to buy and maintain equipment for cemetery maintenance, to make cemetery improvements, and to pay for professional services as needed. For more information, email us at friendsofshadylane@gmail.com.
